Fans of supernatural TV shows are in for a treat. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dark Shadows, the cult gothic soap opera from the 1960s, is returning as an animated reboot.
While many remember Dark Shadows for introducing the iconic vampire Barnabas Collins, the series originally began as a gothic romance with elements of family drama. As the show evolved, it embraced a more supernatural direction, featuring vampires, ghosts, werewolves, and other creatures, helping it become one of television’s most recognized cult classics.
The series became hugely popular with teenage audiences and eventually grew into ABC’s highest-rated daytime drama during its initial run. Its success led to two feature films following the show’s cancellation, a 1991 television revival, and a 2012 film adaptation directed by Tim Burton.
The animated reboot is expected to continue the Collins family saga, with Lisa Holdsworth (Call the Midwife, Dreamers) serving as showrunner. No premiere date or additional details have been announced.
For longtime fans, the announcement marks the latest chapter in a franchise that has captivated for more than five decades. While many shows of its era have faded into television obscurity, Dark Shadows continues to find new life with each generation, proving that audiences still have an appetite for its blend of gothic mystery, supernatural storytelling, and the lasting legacy of the Collins family.
